2,225 Devices Managed with Cortado MDM
Digital transformation is also transforming the railway industry – the Eastern German Railway Corporation (ODEG) proves it. Since 2015, the company has relied on mobile devices to modernize the daily work of train drivers, service staff, administration, and maintenance personnel. Centralized management of these devices is handled via Cortado MDM. In an interview with Mr. Ullrich, ODEG’s Head of IT, it’s clear that here, innovation is perfectly blended with pragmatism.
It All Started with Digitalizing the Driver’s Cab
“We realized early on that we needed a solution to efficiently manage the many tablets and smartphones,” explains Mr. Ullrich. “When we decided to digitalize the driver’s cab, it was clear that we needed an MDM system.”
ODEG equips its employees – train drivers and service staff – with two devices: a tablet and a smartphone. Train drivers primarily use tablets for timetables and training materials due to the larger display and better readability. Smartphones, on the other hand, are used for tasks like making calls. Additionally, ODEG uses Casio mobile ticket sales devices for printing tickets bought by passengers. These Android devices are also managed with Cortado MDM. Altogether, 2,225 devices are covered.
Why Cortado?
Before choosing Cortado MDM, ODEG worked with another provider. “We regularly had issues with our old solution. So, we analyzed the market and evaluated several providers,” recalls Mr. Ullrich. “Cortado convinced us – especially with its straightforward communication and proximity. As a Berlin-based company, they’re practically right around the corner, which was nice to know.”
Mr. Ullrich particularly highlights the direct connection to support: “No call centers, no endless waiting loops – we have dedicated contacts who know our needs and truly help us.”
Optimized Workflows and Happy Employees
By implementing Cortado MDM, ODEG significantly improved its workflows. Timetable changes or new training materials are now distributed to devices in real time. “In the past, we’d relay changes over the phone or send large stacks of paper back and forth. Now, everything is digital, saving us a lot of time and resources,” says Mr. Ullrich. “It’s a real leap forward.”
Focus on Flexibility and Security
ODEG uses Android devices selected on criteria such as value for money and suitability for purpose. Bring-your-own-device (BYOD) is not an option, and all devices are provided by the company. Private use of the devices is not allowed. “Our devices run only the apps necessary for the job,” explains Mr. Ullrich.
A standout feature is the quick availability of replacement devices. “If a train driver’s tablet is out of use, a replacement needs to be provided quickly. After all, it stores all timetable documents, and without them, the driver isn’t allowed to operate the train,” Mr. Ullrich pointed out. “That’s why we have replacement devices at several locations to ensure operations run smoothly.”
Moving Forward Together
ODEG is satisfied with its choice. Mr. Ullrich notes: “Our requests are taken seriously and implemented. It shows that our opinions matter.”
Looking ahead, Mr. Ullrich doesn’t foresee major changes. “We’re well-positioned. Of course, there will always be minor updates, but the overall concept is very solid. And with Cortado, we have a partner we can rely on.”
Conclusion: Digitalization with Heart and Mind
Working with Cortado MDM has helped ODEG modernize processes and respond to changes more quickly. With direct support and efficient communication, Cortado has earned ODEG’s trust. “We feel well-supported,” Mr. Ullrich summarizes. “Cortado fits us – and we fit Cortado.”
